I remained in the reading funk until school started. I have read only 4 books since August 20,2012. I will have reviews up for two. Next month, on December 3, 2012, post will return as usual. Here's the schedule:

                                                               Monday: Review

                                                           Thursday: What's Next
I am sorry for abandoning you guys and occasionally there may be a week or two with no posts but know that's because I'm busy with school projects etc.

Waiting on Wednesday (14)

Black City by Elizabeth Richards
Expected Publication Date: November 13, 2012
Publisher: Putnam Son
A dark and tender post-apocalyptic love story set in the aftermath of a bloody war. In a city where humans and Darklings are now separated by a high wall and tensions between the two races still simmer after a terrible war, sixteen-year-olds Ash Fisher, a half-blood Darkling, and Natalie Buchanan, a human and the daughter of the Emissary, meet and do the unthinkable--they fall in love. Bonded by a mysterious connection that causes Ash's long-dormant heart to beat, Ash and Natalie first deny and then struggle to fight their forbidden feelings for each other, knowing if they're caught, they'll be executed--but their feelings are too strong. When Ash and Natalie then find themselves at the center of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to pull the humans and Darklings back into war, they must make hard choices that could result in both their deaths.
Why I can't wait:  I have always been interested in the Berlin Wall and this sounds kinda like a twist to that but it's post-apocalyptic so it has to be even better, right? I love forbidden loves too right now and I have no idea why.

Review: The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han

The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han
Publication Date: April 6, 2010
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Format: Paperback
Source: Purchased
Pages: 267
Some summers are just destined to be pretty. Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer -- they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one wonderful and terrible summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along.
I had heard a lot of amazing things about The Summer I Turned Pretty and today, I'm going to add another to that list.

Every summer Belly and her brother, Steven,  go to the beach/summer house that their mom's friend, Susannah, owns. Susannah has two of her own kids, both boys, Conrad, the oldest, and Jeremiah, the youngest. Belly has always had a thing for Conrad and when he says she's changed, she thinks that that will be the summer everything changes between her and Conrad.

Belly turns sixteen that summer. She was definitely not stupid but I wouldn't say she always knew what was right to say and do. The main reason I really enjoyed about this novel was Belly. She was just so so so relatable to and I honestly felt like I would have made the same mistakes as her.

The plot was good. It wasn't a one hundred percent pure unique idea that I had never read before. It was unique though with the brothers and how they related and everything.

The writing style was probably a big part of why I enjoyed it so much. It was so fluent and smooth. It's hard to describe something so great. It felt like a breeze.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book. It has that pick me up feel too it that I absolutely adored! I felt like I was reading it for 20 minutes and then I was done but I actually wasn't. This is also a great and easy beach read and I would know because I read it while on vacation, at the beach.

Review: Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown

Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown
Publication Date: June 12, 2012
Publisher: Random House
Format: ARC
Source: Publisher *in exchange for an honest review*
Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge. They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake. Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistable good looks and charm on ususpecting girls. Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him.

Yes, this is a mermaid book. When I think of mermaids I automatically think of Ariel and love stories. There is love in this book but it's a real kind of love.

Every year, the mermaids migrate. Calder is in the Bahamas when his sister, Maris, starts annoying him with her phone calls. He doesn't pick up for awhile but he finally does and the news will change his life forever. Calder migrates back to Lake Superior even though he really doesn't want to. The girls have found John Hancock, son of Tom Hancock who is supposedly responsible for their mothers death.

The sisters, Tallulah, Maris, and Pvati, and of course Calder, come up with a plan to get to John Hancock. This plan is mainly on Calder's shoulders, he will have to seduce the older girl to fall in love with him to he can get into the family. But, plans take a dramatic turn and more than one person may be at risk.

Calder was the perfect male character. He was caring but still very protective. That is what I always like in a main character. He doesn't want to go along with everything mermaids are supposed to do, he knows it wrong.

Maris, oh my gosh, don't even get me started. She was the oldest of the family and definitely the meanest.
Pvati was the one that everyone fell in love with because of her looks. She could get anyone and I mean anyone, into the water. Tallulah was the kind, nice sister who just kind of went along with what everyone wanted.

The plot was very different and I definitely liked that. It had those certain elements that I love and some that I hadn't seen before. The writing style was amazing!! I loved it and I think it was really good for this type of story.

Overall, Lies Beneath was a very different, but breath-taking read. This was my first mermaid and I am proud to say that I am hooked on mermaid books now. I will gladly pick up anything else that Anne writes.

Waiting on Wednesday (13)

Blind Spot by Laura Ellen
Expected Publication Date: October 23, 2012
Publisher: Harcourt
There’s none so blind as they that won’t see.
Seventeen-year-old Tricia Farni’s body floated to the surface of Alaska’s Birch River six months after the night she disappeared. The night Roz Hart had a fight with her. The night Roz can’t remember. Roz, who struggles with macular degeneration, is used to assembling fragments to make sense of the world around her. But this time it’s her memory that needs piecing together—to clear her name . . . to find a murderer. This unflinchingly emotional novel is written in the powerful first-person voice of a legally blind teen who just wants to be like everyone else.

Why I can't wait: Blind Spot sounds like a dystopian/ sci-fi which I have been really getting into lately. I am really into mysteries too which this seems to have a hint of that in it! I can not wait until October!

Waiting on Wednesday (12)

My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick
Release Date: June 14, 2012
Publisher: Dial Books
“One thing my mother never knew, and would disapprove of most of all, was that I watched the Garretts. All the time.”
The Garretts are everything the Reeds are not. Loud, numerous, messy, affectionate. And every day from her balcony perch, seventeen-year-old Samantha Reed wishes she was one of them . . . until one summer evening, Jase Garrett climbs her terrace and changes everything. As the two fall fiercely in love, Jase's family makes Samantha one of their own. Then in an instant, the bottom drops out of her world and she is suddenly faced with an impossible decision. Why I can't wait: Huntley sounds like the my kind of author. I have hear NOTHING but great things about My Life Next Door. It sounds like a light-hearted romance with some humor probably mixed in.
